Darlings could be classified as a black comedy although the comedic portions may not always make you laugh.
The story revolves around Badru (Alia Bhatt) and Hamza (Vijay Verma) and their dysfunctional marriage; and I use the word dysfunctional lightly!

Badru is the gullible housewife who suffers abuse, both verbal and physical, at the hands of her husband in the guise of love. And Hamza is the alcoholic, abusive, manipulative husband who repeatedly gets away with his actions.
Adding to the mix is Badru’s mother who can see right through Hamza’s vindictive nature and begs her daughter, repeatedly, to leave her husband but to no avail.

Until one fine day a tragic event changes Badru’s life forever and she does a 180 degree turn and transforms herself. Alia Bhatt plays the two shades of her character with great skill.
Shefali Shah also does an excellent job as Alia’s mother.
But the scene stealer, for me, was Vijay Verma. Vijay, who gained prominence from Gully Boy, steals the show in this movie. You will truly hate him in the movie he is that good!Darlings is a complex film. It deals with abuse, domestic violence, chauvinism, self-respect.

While some portions might be tough to digest, overall, Darlings is an enjoyable film with some superlative performances!
